Postby St Albans Shrimp » Thu May 14, 2009 2:42 pm

I have been supporting the Shrimps since 1971 and I dont remember us ever getting relegated - we had a near miss a few years ago in the Conference however have we ever been relegated. Thanks

we had some very near misses in the 80's looking at old league tables where we finished 3rd from bottom a couple of times.

Nope, never been relegated.

But......in the days of the Lancashire Combination and early years of the Northern Premier League, finishing top and bottom did not automatically mean that you were promoted or relegated. During the 1980-81 season we finished 21st out of 22 clubs, level on points with Tamworth finishing above them on goal difference. Due to our poor position we had to seek re-election to the league, which was granted.

In fact, we were crap all the way through the 70's and early 80's not once finishing in the top-half of the Northern Premier. I wasn't alive at the time, but it's all in Potted Shrimp a book charting the history of Morecambe FC by Ken Ormrod. Worth getting hold of a copy if you can.

Highlights of the 1980-81 season included the opening of Radio Christie with D.J. Steve Middlesbrough, the opening of the programme shop by Percy Mitton, and the opening of the World Cup Bar under the main stand.

Ha, Radio Christie, I forgot about that !

Hardly a highlight of that year even though it was around the time we lost 9-0 at home to Bangor City - which was not too pleasant

Radio Christie wasn't actually ON the radio in any way, shape or form but I thought it sounded good at the time

Now it's Radio Swidz of course :0)

( I'll now give this post about 15 minutes incidently !)

Surely only someone who is desperate to get on the radio in 1981 would call it Radio Christie? Especially when it was nothing more than a tape machine and three tin cans!

As I have always said about you Poo, you have the voice for a Monastry but the face for Radio. ;)

We have been Champions I'll have you know! Lancashire Combination Champions in seasons:

1924/25
1961/62
1962/63
1966/67
1967/68

Though never been promoted as Champions, which I guess is what you're getting at.

Looks like we had a strong side in the 60's....did we ever apply to join the Football League?

Repeatedly, but the 'old boy's network' contrived to keep the likes of Southport & Rochdale up. I think I'm right in saying that the first time Barrow finished bottom they were thrown out while some more accessible clubs had repeated re-election?
