Abiding memories of our time in the Football League

Abiding memories of our time in the Football League

Postby fulwoodshrimp » Sun Apr 20, 2025 5:12 pm

As our time in the EFL draws to a close I wonder what memories Shrimps fans will have. 3 from me to get the ball rolling. Two are Stockton goals. One from half way to win at Fleetwood a few years ago and one at Charlton to give us victory in our quest to stay in League One. My third memory is of the dodgy standard of refereeing in a large number of games and a feeling in some that a number of referees were corrupt and perhaps taking inducements. Obviously no proof of this but some referees performances were very questionable. Has anyone got other lasting memories?

I think the one thing about that Stockton winner v Fleetwood is that the ball hit the back of the net without bouncing, it was simply a special goal.

As a complete contrast the abuse that was thrown at Akinfenwe one Tuesday night almost made that the last time I wanted to have anything to do with Morecambe.

Ipswich, at Portman Road. Incredible, sitting there, remembering playing them in the FA Cup for the first time. If someone had said 'one day, you'll be in the same League', you'd have thought they were mad. Playing Sunderland was a similar experience, but with the two FA Cup games, Ipswich was extra special.

Wrexham bringing their own referee on the team coach, goes down as one of the worst refereeing displays I've ever seen.

So how did that work out then?

Playing Sheffield Wednesday at home and winning. Not a big cup game just 3 points in a league clash.

The no look penalty at Wembley, balls of steel that lad.

League cup away at Wolves. Out footballed them.

Stocktons last minute goal of course and unfortunatly for me, being in the away end when Morecambe beat Barnsley in league One........the year BFC were in the Prem Mfc wern't even in the Conference, MFC were since 1968 my small non league side, so to see them in the same division was strange.....

That first year or two in the league and the cup runs in the league cup, winning at PNE and Wolves.

After that the money seemed to run out and every year was a struggle.

The couple of years in league one were fun and an added bonus, but you always need reality would eventually kick in and we would be back fighting for survival.

Away at Ipswich in EFL 1. Start of season and 2-1 up in injury time. They then equalised but we matched them throughout and out sung 20,000 plus tractor boys (and girls).

Enjoyed the night game against Derby at the Mazuma when Connor Ripley saved two penalties to get us a 3-3 draw.

All the games against the massive clubs were great and we held our own a lot of the time. Away at Spurs and 1-0 up till late on. Absolute dream world!
